The Astrology of 2012
May 17, 2012. Looking out to the western horizon in the early evening is a light so bright it seems to be beckoning humanity across time and space. On June 1, this light disappears. This is Venus, the second planet closest to the Earth, named after the Roman Goddess of Love and Beauty, in her most crucial underworld cycle of the last 2,000 years.s
Beginning with May 16 retrograde, she disappears from the western horizon on June 1 to make a June 7 helical rise in the sign of Gemini, which rules global media in the communication age.
This year, the disappearance of Venus culminates in a rare occurrence of her passing directly before thee Sun from our earthly perspective, creating a perfect alignment between the Earth, Venus and the Sun. The last time this happened was 1882, when the ancient Mayan sacred sites were rediscovered. A time previous of the passage of Venus before the Sun in alignment with Earth was in 1518 and 1526 when the Spanish arrived in Mexico and Hernan Cortes was thought by the Aztecs to be the Return of Quetzalcoatl.
To the Mayans, and later the Aztecs, Venus was personified in Quetzalcoatl, the male god who, together with his twin brother Xolotl, married the opposites of light/dark, night and day, conscious/unconscious.
This is a parallel to the western myth the Sumerian Goddess Inanna, self-declared Queen of Heaven and Earth, whose 584-day cycle was mythologized as a passage to and from the Underworld in search of her son/lover, Dumuzi, where she is killed by her dark sister, Ereshkigal, to be resurrected into a new archetype.
Jose Arguelles brought into the millennial collective consciousness the fact of the Mayan calendar ending on the Winter Solstice, 2012. On August 16-17, 1987, Arguelles instigated a global act of performance art to reflect the cosmic Harmonic Convergence and bring this evolutionary awareness on the universal stage.
Today, the mere fact that 2012 has reached a level of global discourse reveals the success of Arguelles’ mission: to alert humanity of the birth of a new cosmological age. The beginning of a new age is determined by an astronomical phenomenon known as precession. The Earth revolves on a tilt, like a spinning top, as it makes its annual cycle around the sun. The moments that it meets the sun on its cyclical path, known as the ecliptic, mark the meridians, the start of the four seasons. Yet, the tilt that causes the earth to move backwards in its cycle is mirrored in the sun’s backwards cycle through the zodiac in what is known as The Great Year. Every approximate 2000 years the zodiac sign visible on the earth’s horizon at the Spring Equinox shifts backwards, which is why we are moving from the Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius.
Yet, there is also the mythology surrounding Arguelles’ January 24 birth date revealing the cosmic forces behind his role in waking up humanity to the cyclical Myth of Eternal Return. On January 23, 1997 there was a hexagram formed between the eastern horizon, the Sun and Moon, with Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. This configuration is known as the hieros gamos, or Sacred Marriage of Opposites, the 21st century icon foreseen by Wolfgang Pauli and Carl Jung, and declared by cultural historian and professor of philosophy, Richard Tarnas.
What does this configuration have to do with the end date of the Mayan calendar? Everything. While the Mayan priests were able to pinpoint the end of the Great Year, the actual death of an age, through their mathematical calculations related to the cycles of Venus and the shift of the Equinoxes, they couldn’t have foreseen the cosmology reflecting the birth of a new age. This is because the hexagram formed between the eastern horizon of the earth and the Full Moon is completed by the transcendental planets — Uranus, Neptune and Pluto — now made visible through super telescopes.
Yet the individual that delivered the message of the Mayans was born under this influence! And as further proof of its significance, we have the timely public disclosure of the writer Ana Castillo declaring before the California Foremothers of Spiritual Femininism…
…her Eureka discovery: the Virgin of Guadalupe as the Great Mother of the Milky Way, begetting the new divine birth from her very loins through the Black Hole at the very center of the galaxy!
According to Mircea Eliade, the great teacher of comparative religion, The Myth of Eternal Return is the means by which humanity renews itself. The mythical story of Venus and her son/lover that recurs at the onset of every Great Year is lived first by the gods in the heavens, to be repeated into perpetuity by the rituals and ceremonial traditions of humanity. Our task is to read these myths clearly through the relationships among the cycling bodies in space and to filter their power into our dreams, our stories, our songs, our paintings.
How will this myth be played out in 2012? The mere fact of the Mayan end date creating a discussion about cycles and the natural holism experienced by indigenous people, along with the World Wide Web liberating the authentic feminine voice (doggedly stifled by patriarchal institutions) is the myth we are living: multiple voices reflecting the Aquarian birth of an authentic gender equality arising from the renewal of the myth of Venus traveling to the underworld to claim her son/lover. This time the myth will be about the collective search for equal partnership in which the imbalance of the previous ages, reflected in Inanna with her son/lover Dumuzi (Age of Taurus), Ishtar with her son/lover Tammuz (Age of Aries) and Aphrodite with her son/lover Cupid, mortalized as Mary with her son/lover Jesus for the Age of Pisces. While the male prophets of the Age of Pisces continued the myth of unequal partnership with a celibate “son of god”, this time around the Myth of Eternal Return, via multiple voices of the authentic feminine, will provide a reflecting kaleidoscope of what a truly dynamic equal partnership looks and feels like at a time that women are emerging into their Goddess given power.
The cycle of Venus was so revered by our ancestors simply because of its acute, perfectly symmetrical regularity through its passage from Morning to Evening Star. The pentagram configuration made by helical risings in eight-year cycles can be tracked by the human eye, which makes Venus a remarkable timer connected to larger cycles, such as the shifting of the ages. Every 564 days, Venus disappears from the western horizon, to form an interior conjunction with the sun, after which she reappears 8 days later in her brightest phase, the helical rising, which brings Venus into a new cycle stamped with a the archetypal energy of the constellation backdrop .
This spring’s retrograde cycle reflects the 130-year great cycle of Venus in which the Aztecs were awaiting the Return of Quetzalcoatl. Just as the Sumerians viewed Venus from the perspective of her monthly conjunction with the heavenly Crescent Moon boat, the Aztecs anticipated the arrival of Quetzalcoatl on an crescent-shaped boat that, Castillo points out, must have looked like it came from the sky. It is likely that Cortes had an astrologer informing him of timing related to the Venus cycle, which explains why the Conquistadors were welcomed as representatives of the Eternal Return.
The phenomenon of Venus passing closest to the Earth during its interior conjunction with the Sun is what the Mayans personified in Cortes and his beautiful NewWorld guide, La Malinche…
the human counterpart to the “sacred marriage” of Venus in her interior conjunction with the Sun. Indeed, the prophecy of merging was fulfilled by the Conquest, which created New Spain as a catastrophic merging of Old and New Worlds. The connection to the cosmos that would be crushed by the Catholic Church in Europe would continue on under cover in the Americas, where we find today the connection between the Mayan End Date and the birth of a new archetype, for the Age of Aquarius. The new archetype, the hieros games, is associated with the Aquarian female who integrates masculine and feminine in her dynamic personality, a modern day reflection of the pre-patriarchal Inanna, the Love Goddess of ancient Sumer.
This phenomenon occurs anew on June 6, 2012, thereby delivering a mythical narrative drawn from planetary relationships into human consciousness. The marriage of opposites this time is that of a global culture united by the World Wide Web, universally acknowledging the emergence of a new archetype, the hieros gamos, reflected by Venus in the sign of the Twins.
To the Aztecs, Venus as Morning and Evening Star took the form of Quetzalcoatl and his evil twin. Mercury, which rules the sign of Gemini symbolized by the Caduceus, is the patron of alchemy. This ancient art seeks the divine marriage of embodiment reflected in the darkening of the light under a solar eclipse. The June 6 Interior Conjunction of Venus with the Sun takes place under the sweep of the June 4 annular Lunar Eclipse in Gemini; these signs account for the right/left hemispheres of the human brain. While the influence of a regular lunation is typically 48 hours, eclipses have effects for several years. The impact of the Moon’s nodes aligned on the ecliptic with the Sun is capable of ushering in a new cycle, and the ancient priests consolidated their power because they knew of the timing of eclipses and could plan their ceremonial rituals around them, thereby instilling fear and awe in the people as timed events on earth reflected the cosmological cycles.
Change happens due to the mental processing catalyzed by the cosmological trigger of an eclipse. The darkening of the lunar lights enables the unconscious material to rise. In this manner, new myths enter the public consciousness. Contained within the cosmology of the divine Aquarian Goddess giving birth at the moment of the Winter Solstice 2012, is a magical configuration known as the Yod, what astrologers refer to as the “Finger of God.” At 8 degrees (see chart above), this EXACT configuration is the result of several months’ formulation, beginning with Saturn’s October 8 ingress into Scorpio. Saturn and Pluto, in mutual reception in the feminine signs of Scorpio and Capricorn, make a Y formation to Jupiter in the masculine sign, Gemini. The message here is the arising of the feminine voice which embodies the Aquarian archetype of the sacred marriage, awakening the globe the cosmic renewal. The Capricorn/Scorpio handle means controlled Kundalini power channeled into a rebirth of global media, which has been chronicling the downfall of those who fail to consciously embody the awakened serpent power.
This interpretation grows out of the mythology of the 2012 cycle of Venus. The impact of the June 12 helical rising at 7 degrees Gemini is heightened by the June 4 lunar eclipse trigger point for Jupiter’s passage through Gemini.

This cosmology declares the Voice of the Feminine gathering forces to rectify the imbalance, resulting in global devastation. Virtually every sign we look at in the making of this cosmology is that of the balancing act of the hieros gamos!
Is it any wonder that the cosmology is such a surprise, given that the authentic Feminine Voice has been stifled for so long? Connecting the emergence of the feminine voice to the End Date of the Mayan Calendar was Arguelles’ broader project. The mystical scholar was pioneering a movement to from the western Gregorian Calendar to the “13 Moon Natural Time Calendar” before he died. No doubt he envisioned the earth’s salvation as attuning human consciousness to the natural cycles of nature. Such a paradigm shift would emphasize the feminine menses as sacred, while giving voice to that which has been repressed for several millennia–the essential role of female creation and gestation within the life/death/renewal cycle.
In sum, the significance of the end date of the Mayan calendar is the very notion of cyclical time embodied in its circular geometry. It is time we realize that we are already living in the apocalypse of 2012, a state in which we are increasingly divorced from nature, eating genetically modified food, absorbing the toxic by-products of a still-unfolding international nuclear disaster, inured to the splendors of the night sky, both by our urban nightmare and the entrancement of technology. The Mayan understanding of cyclical time, as compared to the hierarchical, linear time that is leading us to global destruction, is the model we need to adopt to liberate humanity from its current death and instill a renewal enabling us to consciously surrender to the unconscious thrall of the natural world. Embodying this duality naturally gives birth to a unity–the Age of Aquarius.
